Tyson's Spring Program
Last night was Tyson's first grade spring singing program. All the kids wore matching 100 book club t-shirts they earned by reading. Tyson worked really hard to earn his. He even stayed up late one night and read thirty books using his neck flashlight. He is a definitely a night owl.
There is a reason Ty is only wearing one shoe in this picture. The program didn't go smoothly for him. A few songs into the program I noticed Ty was acting a little strange. He kept bending over, looking around distressed and wiping his eyes with his shirt. I mentioned to Chad that I thought something was wrong. I had the normal thoughts - is he sick - did he wet his pants? I also had the diabetic mom thoughts - is he too high - too low - is he about to collapse? My biggest fear for him is having some kind of diabetic episode that makes the other kids hesitant around him (so far we haven't). I realized that I hadn't given him his insulin for his dinner, he had been really low before he started eating so I was waiting for him to get his sugar levels up before I gave him any insulin. His pump is awesome, I gave him the insulin from my seat. By this time Chad was at the front on the side trying to get his attention. When he started crying I walked up the center aisle and kneeled down next to his teacher. You could tell he was distressed, but he didn't want to get in trouble by coming down. I had his teacher motion for him to come down and he finally did. We took him out into the hall and he burst into tears and said he had lost his shoe. It was quite traumatic for him, but I was relieved. We tested his blood just in case. He was high, which makes him more emotional. We spent the rest of the program in the hall, he was too embarrassed to go back up. When it was over he met up with class and walked back to his room to get a sucker. We found the shoe on the stage and everything turned out OK.
